Stack chord tones, then hear how harmony shifts against the beat.

This lesson moves from single notes into harmonic shape. Try a simple progression first, then change the root or scale and listen for how the chord color changes the whole loop.

How to use this page

Place two or three chord tones on the grid, press play, and listen to whether the harmony feels settled or tense. Once that lands, bring in the drum part to check the progression in context.

Quick start

  1. 1
Build one chord shapePlace a few notes together and hear the harmonic block before adding a progression.
  2. 2
Change the contextUse root or scale choices to hear how the same voicing behaves under a different tonal center.
  3. 3
Check the grooveBring in the drums once the harmony feels clear enough to support a pulse.
Listen for this

Chords feel different not only because of pitch choice, but because of when they land and how long they hold.

Listen: hear one chord clearly before writing a progression. Edit: move the root or scale to test harmonic color. Loop: add drums after the harmony already makes sense.
Primary practice surface Place chord tones on the sequencer first, then use the drum layer to hear how harmony sits inside a groove.

Now that you've learned a bit about chords, spend some time creating your own patterns and progressions.

You can also create beats that will play in sync with your chords.
